SPF 100 no better than SPF 30, says dermatologists

Summer is here, glowing and healthy skin always start with a good protection against the sun,

Here’s essential information about sunscreen and how to protect our skin:

Super SPF sunscreens are soon going to be a thing of the past.

 

By June 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has required sunscreen manufacturers to change the labels on their products.

Brands boasting of SPF 80, SPF 110 or more will no longer be allowed to do so. Instead, they’ll have to make do with the label, SPF "50 plus."

The FDA's ban on SPF claims greater than 50 is based on several studies revealing that consumers falsely believe that the higher the SPF, the longer they may expose themselves to the sun

This inaccurate notion has led to risky behavior in the general public, eventually leading to more cases of skin cancer.

Dr. Darrell Rigel, a clinical professor in dermatology at the New York University Medical Center says "An increase in SPF from 30 to 50 has only a one percent increase in protection against the harmful rays of the sun."

High SPF protects only a fraction of what’s claimed

Here are a few tips on how to protect yourself from the sun:

1. All skin types, colors, ages need sunscreen. More than 3.5 million people have skin cancer.

2. When your shadow is shorter than you, sunscreen is not enough. Get under the shade or wear protective clothing like a hat, long sleeved shirts or umbrellas.

3. Wear sunscreen daily even if you’re not in the beach. Eighty percent of UV rays can still pass through even on a cloudy day. Sand and water increases the sun's reflection by 25 percent.

4. Use sunscreen on all areas not covered by clothing. One ounce or a one shot glass is the ideal amount to cover all the exposed parts of the body. Therefore an 8-ounce bottle of sunscreen should last only for 8 applications. Using less than one ounce still puts you at risk for skin cancer.

5. Allow the sunscreen to dry for 15 minutes before going outdoors.

6. Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours after swimming or sweating. No matter what the bottle says, sunscreen is NOT waterproof.

7. Know what type of sunscreen works best for you. Different types are ideal for different areas of the body.

          Creams for face and dry skin.

          Gels for hairy areas like men's chests especially baby's scalp.

          Sticks for areas around the eyes.

          Sprays are ideal and easier to apply on children.

8. Be aware of the expiration date. A sunscreen loses its protection after three years. Don't feel bad about throwing out a bottle that is half-full. The damage it can cause is not worth the extra pesos you spend on a new one.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope camera, which will capture the widest, fastest and deepest view of the night sky ever observed, has received “Critical Decision 1” approval by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to move into the next stage of the project

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will survey the entire visible sky every week, creating an unprecedented public archive of data – about 6 million gigabytes per year, the equivalent of shooting roughly 800,000 images with a regular eight-megapixel digital camera every night, but of much higher quality and scientific value. Its deep and frequent cosmic vistas will help answer critical questions about the nature of dark energy and dark matter and aid studies of near-Earth asteroids, Kuiper belt objects, the structure of our galaxy and many other areas of astronomy and fundamental physics

In this artist's rendition, the LSST primary mirror is seen through the slit of the dome at sunset. The LSST will carry out a deep, ten-year imaging survey in six broad optical bands over the main survey area of 18,000 square degrees. 2011

Confidence.... can kill!

We were at Nasser sport last night with the whole family, my brother in-law busy texting his family in the Philippines while on queue to pay our stuff,

after like 10mins, we were shock to see the security guard in front of us, wanting to get hold of my brother’s in-law mobile,  Tension rises as to why the hell is wrong with these security guards?  Then, two fat, black ladies almost look like orangutan came in, pointing their fingers to my brother in-law saying that he is trying to get a snap of them…..

I was like… huh??!! What??!  Do I hear them right???  They’re complaining against my brother in-law because they thought they are so pretty that all people want to get a picture of them??! For heaven sake!! …. These ladies are freakin’ insane!!!! , it’s funny how my brother in-law throw his words against the ladies, he completely surrender his phone to the security and ask them to see the photo galleries with no hesitation..

With a loud voice, he said:  Excuse, why would I take photo of you when I have a very beautiful wife??? For what should I waste my time and space?!! Did both of you look at the mirror???  Girls, please enough with your hallucination I have enough ugly faces surrounds me and faces like that is just a waste of time and SD space ….!

Everyone laughed as well as me and my sister, the security confirmed as well that there is no photo taken but he was just texting….  The ladies with their ozzing confident still warn us not to take photos of them coz it’s haram… we were laughing and we heard somebody shouted behind, HARAM your FACE!! Hahahahha……..

I could not believed what I have witnessed, what a shame!!!  Confidence is good but please be true to yourself,  know your limit and look at the mirror and seek reality!!!

Creativity....! be Proud of it!!

When I was in college, I used to collect lots of comic strips and colorful tribal lettering, I can still remember my grandma's nasty face looking at my stuff, she don't like it at all, till then, I stop creating nor designing because my granny hate it!! she said that, the only people who do such designs are from the jail- (creative criminals that is!!)

Years passed by, I started working in kuwait, accidentally, I was assigned to design a bulletin board for our department, I was hesitant at first but, I did finishned it with a heads up,  

IT'S OVERWHELMING , all out praises are flowing!!  I can't really explain my feeling but I was indeed flattered and extremely proud of the outcome!!

It's not done yet but Each and every piece is made from recyled materials, each photo and designs co-relate to each other even the colors and background are prefectly blend,

my granny would be so proud of me, the once nasty piece of art is now a wonderful creation I can be proud of,  and for the young readers of this blog, I can only say that, if you enjoy something, a hobby, sports, art or anything alike, don't let anyone drag you down....  just enjoy what you're doing and let your feelings show!!...

Power Balance

I was in shouk last night with hubby and found this power bracelet, I remember reading this popular stuff on the net but was not really interested, however, with all the trend and publicity it encourage me to try on and bought one for myself, well, I never felt change at all,  i don't want to say that the product is not effective but maybe it's not working for me....

would be best to go to gym and do practical things that would boost your energy, eat right, avoid stress and get a lot of sleep... so power bracelet, i guess, I have to bit farewell, not for me then!! ciao!

Acer 310 Mini- my New Phone

I received my new company phone today,

Anyhow, upon receiving the phone I was indeed pleased with the physical aspect of the phone, it's stylish and I love the light pinkish color of the phone and with all the accessories provided in the box, it's overwhelming because the phone not only gives me an access to whaTever on-line applications I require like facebook, google search, games and so on, it's actually easy and friendly user phone with android OS

I'm happy and would recommend it to anyone who's on the budget but would want a stylish,colorful and easy to use phone, you can't go wrong with this phone, well, video call is not supported but whatelse do I need eh?!.... love it and live it!!!

I thought, ACER is just another cheap mobile with limited application, surprisingly, it's way better that what I expected!!

Just a brief history why I landed with ACER phone, it's actually depends on the internal grade of the employee, Admin. will provide the mobile that suits to the  grade budget and ACER e10 price KD60/- is just the right match for my grade & budget...

Engr or Eng, what's right??!!

I was assigned to handle the printing materials for whole company, so regularly I am receiving loads of request for printing specially business cards and much to my surprise most of these request requires their titles to be clearly mentioned without any 

Interference on my side

On one or two occassion, I tried to correct the ENG to ENGR as I know , that is the standard which stands for Engineer, it always comes back to me with a big remarks on the proofing that ENGR is not even a word in kuwait, I was like... who the hell started this!!??!!

or maybe I'm wrong, but needless to say, ENG stands for ENGLISH or ELECTRONIC, and ENGR is the proper abbrevation for Engineer as per wikipedia,

but it is more confusing when I found this site:

Chinatic Obsession...!

I was in 360 malls last Friday with my family for usual weekend breakfast, on our way to the elevator I was captivated with the wonderful wedding dress display in PRONOVIAS shop, it’s chic, classic with modern sexy touch, I went near to the display and was really sad coz I feel that I cannot afford such gown on my own, the cost is around KD 400/ gown,

To be honest, middle class expat like me would rather buy/pay something more important than this piece of clothing for one time event, but somehow, church wedding is also important part of me,

Well, a person I am won’t stop for nothing; I always find my way to find the best deal….

I again, contacted my friend in china and was really pleased with her offer,  I’ll share it with you coz I know the feeling…( really do!...)… you can contact me anytime if you are interested to buy one of these designs….

Finally Completed and not coming back.....

I remember blogging about overcoming my fear of the dentist few months ago, and I actually gain that confidence to step into any dental clinic in whatever service my dentist prescribe,

But recently, I accidentally picked up a DENTAL PROMO flyer from VIRTUS SPECIALIZED DENTAL CENTER, its 45KD bleaching, so when I reached the office I immediately call the clinic to verify the promo and they confirmed that Cleaning + Bleaching = 45KD so immediately I requested for an appointment in the evening, was surprise to know that the clinic is quite near to my apartment which also an advantage

6pm, I was at clinic the staff are friendly, the clinic is tidy and well equipped with all the latest dental equipment, I was indeed pleased with their xray machine, it’s like UFO and it doesn’t require to put anything inside my mouth, just a proper gesture and viola! Ur done!!!!

The next day I was immediately scheduled for scaling and bleaching the day after, well, scaling is tolerable but bleaching is worst!! I only finish my first session coz It’s freaking painful, the Doctor said that they’re people who can finish the full session without pain but in my case my teeth was too sensitive to tolerate the process, but i'm happy with the 3 shades whiter than the usual, but they charged me KD25 Cleaning + KD45 Bleaching which is not what the customer service confirmed to me over the phone

but then again, I’m happy with the result and I swear never to do the bleaching again…!

Weeks after, I noticed that my temporary crown started to have discoloration, I dropped by the clinic again for consultation and my dentist suggested to have a crown but root canal should done first to prevent future infection (cost KD 80 root canal + 20KD filing + 63KD crown), for several days been in & out of the clinic to finish my root canals, and early today I finally completed my painful last session of root canal, it's traumatic!!!
SADLY, my Dental anxiety/phobia is back, , it’s a nightmare and I don’t ever want to sit on dental chair again….! I can’t control my tears while writing this, remembering the moment I was sitting on the dental chair waiting to die, seeing my dentist bit annoyed/ irritated with my reactions on every pain , and going out to the cashier with the bills I cannot imagine!!!

I TRULLY UNDERSTAND THE DENTIST FOR FEELING SO IRRITATED , I SHIVER, I WAS SHAKING & CRYING the whole time- all dentist will agree with me that the kind of patient I am is just pain to their ass!!! LIKE A CHILD,

AND FOR ME who is on the process of fully recovering from dental anxiety,all I have to do is pray…! Longing for the moment to end, get myself out of the place and cry in my dark room for an hour or two or till I felt asleep without the reflection of myself sitting on the dental chair with all the sounds I hear and the pain I bare deep within over and over!!! coz I always been misunderstood and I'm used to it!!.....

I need some Privacy...!
