A French government watchdog recently made an official announcement to the country about the potential risk of mass suicides by converts believing in prophesies of imminent Armageddon. Recent natural disasters combined with anxiety over pandemics and economic concerns has apparently led many heading for a special place in France with the belief that it is the safest place to be when the world ends.
That particular region that has roused suspicion is the hamlet of Bugarach, located in the south of France. The place has long been considered magical by locals, particularly for having an 'upside-down mountain' in which the top layers of rock are older than the lower ones. Many rumors concerning the mountain include it being surrounded by a magnetic force, that it is the site of a concealed alien base, or even that it contains an underground access to another world.
With the influx of New Age visitors in the area lately, many seem to believe that it is the only place in the world which will survive an Apocalypse on December 21, 2012, a date based on an ancient Mayan prophecy
